Hvar Island, sometimes referred to as the ‘Croatian Madeira’, receives more sunshine than anywhere else in the country. The traffic-free streets and beautifully ornamented buildings of Hvar Town are reminiscent of Venice, and the island is known for its rolling green meadows, rocky terrain, clear blue water, islets and coves, as well as for its many fields of lavender and wine estates. It was once a major shipping hub of strategic importance, which resulted in a colourful history and through the ages the island has fallen under Greek, Venetian, Hungarian, Austrian and French rule, amongst others.
