The ancient Mayan ruins of Copán, designated a world Unesco site in 1980, are nestled away in western Honduras. Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, the city had been lying dormant since it was abandoned in the early 10th century, but it was not until the 1930s that the city was finally excavated. Among the best of the ruins are the imposing Acropolis consisting of temples, courts, the Great Plaza, an impressive amphitheatre and the Hieroglyphic Stairway.
The exotic archipelago of the Bay Islands can be found 50km from the Caribbean coast of Honduras. The main islands include Guanaja, Roatan and Utila, and there are also a number of smaller islands. Long stretches of white sandy beach are perfect for those wanting to relax, whilst the coral reef surrounding the islands provide a vibrant underwater world excellent for snorkelling.
Pico Bonito National Park offers an abundance of wildlife including jaguar, toucan, wild pig and many more. With over 400 species of bird, there are also plenty of birdwatching opportunities.
