Moroccan Discovery

This in-depth journey through Morocco encompasses the dramatic landscapes of the Atlas mountains, the huge expanse of rising sand dunes in the Sahara desert, combined with the historic towns of Tangier and Meknes. Also visit the coastal retreat of Essaouira on the Atlantic coast and explore Morocco’s four imperial cities: the former capitals of Meknes, Fez and Marrakech, and the current capital of Rabat.

DAY 2: Casablanca • Rabat

Morning city tour of Casablanca and then depart for Rabat. Afternoon tour of Rabat including the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum. Stay at Villa Mandarine for 1 night. (B)

DAY 3: Tangier

Drive to Tangier. Visit the port and its imposing medina, and Cape Spartel. Continue to the Caves of Hercules. After lunch, visit the Mendoubia gardens then walk through the medina and the labyrinth of alleyways. Stay at the Royal Tulip for 1 night. (B)

DAY 4: Chefchaouen • Meknes • Fez

Drive to Fez via Chefchaouen with its bluewashed buildings. Time at leisure before departing for Meknes. Sightseeing tour of Meknes, then continue to Fez for a 2-night stay at Palais Medina & Spa. (B)

Full-day tour of Fez, the oldest of the imperial cities. Visit the medieval medina and explore the bustling souks. Lunch at leisure. Continue to the new city of Fez in the afternoon. (B)

DAY 6: Erfoud

Depart early for Erfoud via the Berber village of Imouzzer du Kandar; the delightful ski resort of Ifrane; and Azrou, a town known for its handicrafts. Continue to Erfoud via the Ziz canyons in the Middle Atlas mountains. Stay at Palais du Desert & Spa for 1 night. (B)

This morning, tour Erfoud and its surrounds. Travel to Merzouga and take a 4×4 excursion into the dunes for a night bivouac and perhaps admire the sunset and sunrise on the sand dunes. Stay at La Belle Etoile for 1 night. (B, D)

Today, visit the main kasbah in Ouarzazate and then drive to the Unesco world heritage site of Ait Benhaddou, a spectacular fortified village used for shooting many films including Lawrence of Arabia. After lunch at leisure, take the long mountainous road called the Tichka Pass, the highest pass in Morocco. Stay at Kasbah du Toubkal for 1 night. (B)

DAY 10: Atlas Mountains • Marrakech
