The capital, Bucharest, lies between Transylvania's Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea. Once known as "Little Paris", it had entire neighbourhoods designed by French architects. Some of these gems are now slightly obscured by more drab post-Stalinist buildings, but nonetheless a Byzantine-style chapel is not too hard to come by.
Wander the streets of this medieval town, including Peles Castle, the Black Church, the main square and its 15th-century hall. Get out of town to see the castle in Bran, with its connection to the fictional Dracula.
This area is home to remarkable painted monasteries, considered to among Europe's greatest artistic monuments. The monasteries include Voronet, Humor and Sucevita, which were all painted in the 15th and 16th centuries.
