Due to its strategic location straddling two continents, it became a crucial crossroads and staging post on the trade routes between east and west. Several empires rose and fell over the centuries, starting with the Hittites, rivals to the great Pharoahs of Egypt.
The Roman empire followed and Constantinople (Istanbul, as it is known today) enjoyed joint capital status with Rome. The city then had more than four centuries of imperial patronage as capital of the great Ottoman empire.

The Roman ruins of Ephesus are extensive and still only partly excavated. One of the most unique buildings here is the Library of Celsus, which once held nearly 12,000 scrolls as well as the sarcophagus of Celsus, a governor of Roman Asia who paid for the construction of the library. The façade of the building remains, carefully rebuilt from the original stones.
Discover the impressive sights on both the Asian and European shores of the Bosphorus. Sail past Ottoman mansions, castles and forts, forested hills and pretty villages. From Istanbul you can sail up as far as the Black Sea.
Visit the colossal stone heads of King Antiochus and the Greek Gods on top of Mount Nemrut in the eastern Anatolian Highlands, which date back to the first century. From here, watch the sun set over the valleys of Mesopotamia with a glass of wine.
Situated in eastern Turkey, Ani was once a medieval Armenian city-state, home to more than 100,000 people and a rival to such great cities as Constantinople. Abandoned and forgotten, the landscape is today studded with the remains of its magnificent buildings.
