Situated in the central region of the island, the lively provincial town of Santa Clara is famous for its connection with Che Guevara, whose attack on a Batista troop train in December 1958 marked a turning point in the Cuban revolution. Today the city houses the Che Guevara Memorial, featuring a mausoleum and museum, as well as the preserved site of the derailed armoured train. In the centre of town lies the vibrant town plaza, Parque Vidal, surrounded by a mix of colonial and neo-colonial buildings, including the Decorative Arts Museum and the José Martí Library.
