Take a half-day city tour including the San Francisco monastery and historical Casa Aliaga. (B)

DAY 3: Fly to Jaen

From Lima, fly north to Jaén. Drive to Chachapoyas, a colonial town surrounded by swathes of high-altitude cloud forests. The Chachapoya civilisation had a culture that fiercely rivalled the Incas. Stay for 2 nights. (N)

DAY 4: Kuelap

Travel to Kuelap fortress and explore one of the largest ancient sites of the Americas, situated on a mountain ridge. (B, L)

DAY 5: Karajia - Gocta Falls

Karajia - Gocta Falls

Visit the mysterious sarcophagi of Karajia, an ancient funerary site of the Chachapoyas. Continue to one of the highest waterfalls in the world, Gocta falls, and stay at a nearby lodge for 2 nights. The lodges enjoy spectacular views of the falls and, until recently, were unknown outside the local area. (B, L)

Take a hike to the base of the falls and relax in serene surroundings. (B, L)

Take a full-day drive towards the coast to Chiclayo and visit one of the excellent museums, such as the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipán. Overnight stay. (B, L)

Continue to Trujillo, visiting the mystical El Brujo pyramid complex and the Cao Museum en route. Stay 2 nights. (B, L)
