Puno lies on the western shore of Lake Titicaca and is used as a base to visit the the floating Uros reed islands, Taquile Island, the Sillustani Tombs and the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. The city serves as the capital of the Peruvian Altiplano and it is the centre of most activity in, on and around the lake. Puno’s centre is the Plaza de Armas, with its cathedral dating back to the mid-seventeenth century.
