Paraguay, land-locked by neighbouring Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia, is one of South America's least densely populated countries.
It is recognised for its beautiful topography, breathtaking waterfalls and indigenous people.
Paraguay is a country full of contradictions - rainforests and man-made dams, rural colonial villages and shopping malls. It is a destination well-worth a visit for its subtle attractions.
Paraguay's lively capital is a city that boasts traditional colonial life alongside modern shops and bars. Downtown El Centro has maintained its historic and cosy feel from the 19th-century – tiny cobbled streets lined with orange trees are overlooked by precarious low-hanging balconies. Visit Casa Viola, one of the few surviving authentic colonial buildings which is now a museum, and do not miss the Palacio de Lopez, the colonial palace. Asunción also has beautiful gardens, namely the Jardín Botánico.
Visit the Chaco, home to Paraguay’s major national parks. Wildlife and nature enthusiasts can also visit the area’s beautiful biological reserves (in Itabo, Limoy, Tati Yupi) or the protected forests in Mbaracayu and Nacunday, where over 600 species of birds, 200 species of mammals and numerous kinds of reptiles and amphibians live.
Iguazu Falls, often referred to as South America's grandest spectacle, consists of some 275 falls that plunge from heights of up to 80 metres. This site of outstanding natural beauty is definitely worth a visit.
