The amazing bio-diversity in Guyana includes an astonishing array of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. There are more than 800 species of birds, including the Guianan cock-of-the-rock, the rufous-winged ground cuckoo, the harpy eagle, the red siskin and the sun parakeet. Fauna that may be spotted includes giant anteaters, giant river otters, capybaras, tapirs, black caimans, poison dart frogs and, with luck, elusive jaguars.
Karanambu lies where the northern grasslands, swamp and flooded forest meet on the Rupununi river. The area is one of the last refuges for the giant river otter, while tropical freshwater fish and teeming birdlife abound.
Iwokrama eco-project has been established since 1996 and is a unique living laboratory for tropical forest management. The 371,000 hectares of rainforest is home to the highest number of bat and fish species in the world. Here you can also spot a jaguar and be welcomed into Amerindian villages.
