Dadanawa is a remote family-run working cattle ranch covering around 4,400 sq km, located on the Rupununi river in southern Rupununi. The area comprises beautiful savanna, where Amerindian paintings and petroglyphs can be found, interspersed with the jungle-clad hills and outcrops of the Kanuku mountains, as well as patches of primary rainforest. Wildlife is abundant and excursions from here provide some of the best opportunities for spotting red siskins, harpy eagles, giant anteaters or possibly an elusive jaguar. The accommodation is very basic, consisting of ranch and bunk houses with shared bathrooms, built high on stilts and affording great views across the savanna. There is no electricity at the ranch and lanterns are used to light the rooms; however, the personalised service from the Defreitas family and its location provide for a rewarding experience.
