PENDING REWRITE AM Located at the entrance of the Llanganates (where the legends say the fabulous treasure of Atahualpa lies), Hacienda Manteles was home to the pre-hispanic culture of the Panzaleos (500 BC), some of whose archaeological remains adorn the walls of the house. Hacienda Manteles has a strong tradition of Ecuadorian/Continental cuisine, and the grounds contain an apple orchard and vegetable garden. When the obscuring clouds clear, the dining room affords wonderful views of the Tungurahua. Hacienda Manteles is a colourfully decorated standard hacienda, situated in the region of Manteles, 11 km from the village of Patate. From the hacienda, there are views to the distant smoking Tungurahua volcano. There are 11 rooms, sitting room and dining room serving excellent local cuisine. Excursions from the Hacienda include a visit to the cloudforest, where birdlife includes hummingbirds and toucans, horseback riding, and trekking.
