The San Agustín archaeological park lies in the mountainous Upper Magdalena region of Colombia’s south-west. The largest collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America can be found here and at several nearby sites. This amazing array of imposing statues (many of anthropomorphic figures and up to 4 metres tall), stone slabs and burial chambers was created by a mysterious pre-Columbian culture.
Popayán, the country’s oldest Spanish settlement, has managed to retain its colonial character, while the remote archaeological site of Tierradentro has fascinating man-made burial caves painted with red, black and white geometric patterns.
