Colombia is very quickly turning into a favourite for travellers. The capital, Bogotá, mixes buzzing modern districts with a historic colonial centre that is best explored on foot. Visit the superb Gold Museum, take a cable car to the Monserrat Hill for panoramic views over the city, and marvel at the Zipaquirá salt cathedral, built on an old salt mine.
Meanwhile, discover well-preserved colonial gems such as the fortified Caribbean port of Cartagena with its enchanting and picturesque walled city, explore the vibrant cultural hub of Medellín with its leafy sculpture filled parks, or find ancient and mysterious pre-Columbian ceremonial sites with huge stone carvings and statues in the lush mountains around San Agustín.
The rolling slopes of the coffee region in central Colombia are dotted with numerous coffee plantations, charming haciendas, picturesque villages and cool green valleys with towering wax palm trees. For relaxation, visit the unspoilt palm-fringed beaches of the Caribbean, where the Sierra Nevada mountains meet the turquoise sea at the beautiful, wild and rugged Tayrona National Park. Otherwise, search for wildlife and meet indigenous communities in the pristine rainforests and along the waterways of the Amazon basin or go whale watching on the Pacific coast.
Set in beautiful countryside, explore the coffee farms and learn about the coffee making process which makes this one of Colombia's biggest exports.
Lose yourself in the maze of cobblestone alleys in the beautiful Spanish colonial city of Cartagena, only to find yourself in one of the romantic cafes and restaurants.
Housing the biggest pre-Hispanic gold collection in the world with over 55,000 pieces, the Gold Museum was expanded and renovated in 2008. With bilingual descriptions of its unique and impressive displays, The Gold Museum is a must see.
