This off-the-beaten-track journey explores some little known secrets of Brazil such as the fascinating Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, the Parnaiba Delta and the beaches and dunes of Jericoacoara. Undertake it as a round trip that starts and ends in Fortaleza, add a visit to the remote Serra da Capivara, or combine the itinerary with other Brazilian destinations.

Start your exploration of north-eastern Brazil in the colonial city of São Luis. Stay for 1 night at the Pousada Portas da Amazonia. Time permitting add an optional city tour of the historic centre. (B)
Head to Barreirinhas, a journey of approximately 4.5 hours. From here explore the stunning white-powder dunes and blue lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses. Stay overnight at Pousada do Buriti or similar. (B)
Take a boat along the Rio Preguiças and visit small river settlements before reaching the Atlantic coast. Transfer along deserted ocean beaches to the river port of Parnaiba. Overnight at Hotel Pousada dos Ventos. (B)
Explore the labyrinth of mangroves, creeks and tropical islands of the Parnaiba delta, one of the largest in the world. In the afternoon drive to Jericoacoara, a relaxed and charming former fishing village surrounded by golden dunes and wild beaches. Stay at Blue Residence for 3 nights and enjoy time at leisure. (B)

Add a pre-tour to the remote Serra da Capivara. This semi-arid national park, a Unesco world heritage site, is home to endemic animal and plant species and its canyons and caves contain incredible prehistoric rock art.
