Fly to Oslo for a 1-night stay at Hotel Thon Opera. (N)
Fly to Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen and embark your chosen ship.
The itinerary will be planned to take advantage of local ice and weather conditions, as well as wildlife sightings. Search for wildlife from the decks of the ship or during daily excursions by Zodiac or on foot. Optional kayaking excursions may be available on selected departures, but space is limited and prebooking is essential. (B, D)
Explore the rugged west coastline of Spitsbergen and discover breathtaking mountains, icy fjords and majestic glaciers. Search for polar bears, seals and walruses, and explore ice-choked bays and channels. Navigate amid icebergs and visit spectacular cliffs to see colonies of thousands of seabirds. Shore landings offer the chance to hike on the tundra or beaches and observe the arctic flora, as well as look for fauna including arctic foxes, Svalbard's unique sub-species of reindeer and breeding eider ducks. Visits will also be made to historic sites, such as whaling stations or expedition huts used on the way to the pole. (B, L, D)
During the crossing to Greenland, keep a look out for seabirds such as fulmars, kittiwakes and razorbills. You may also see humpback and minke whales, and perhaps white-beaked dolphins. Lectures by expedition staff will further inform you about these mammals and birds, and the coastline of Greenland. (B, L, D)
Isolated east Greenland offers truly spectacular fjord systems, such as the vast Scoresby Sund, birthplace of innumerable icebergs and a favoured Inuit hunting ground. Explore the icy waterways by Zodiac and hike into the wilderness of the North-East Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world, where the glacial topography and steep mountains make access almost impossible except on expedition ships. Search for wildlife that may include musk oxen, seals and abundant birdlife, while a visit to the small village of Ittoqqortoormiit provides a glimpse into local culture and life in harsh Arctic conditions. (B, L, D)
Cross the Denmark Strait towards Iceland with seabirds in your wake. (B, L, D)
Disembark your cruise and transfer to Reykjavik airport for your flight to London. Time permitting, en route to the airport add an optional stop at the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing dip in the thermal waters. Alternatively, extend your trip and spend time exploring this fascinating volcanic island. (B)
As per itinerary - B: Breakfast, L: Lunch, D: Dinner, N: No meals.
