Days 2-3: Mt HagenSpend two days in search of the birds found in the high altitude forests behind Rondon Ridge. You may see Macgregor’s bowerbirds, the brown sicklebill, Stephanie’s astrapias and the superb bird-of-paradise, amongst many others. (B, L, D)
Day 4: Lake MurrayFly by charter flight to Lake Murray and transfer to Lake Murray Lodge for 4 nights. This remote lodge is next to the largest lake in Papua New Guinea. Spend the afternoon taking your first exploratory trip out from the lodge. (B, L, D)
Days 5-7: Lake MurrayWestern province is home to over 50% of the country’s bird population, with Lake Murray being one of the best birdwatching areas in the province. Spend 3 days going in search of the array of birds found around this area. In addition to the migratory birds, several birds-of-paradise species, pelicans, eagles and parrots may be sighted. Day 8: Fly to KarawariFly to Karawari and transfer by boat to Karawari Lodge for 3 nights. This lodge is perched on a ridge above a river and provides spectacular views over dense tropical jungle. Enjoy an afternoon of birdwatching. (B, L, D)
Days 9-10: Karawari RiverTwo full days of birdwatching looking for the various lowland, rainforest and freshwater birds found in this region. Cassowaries, frog-mouths, owls, birds of prey, bower birds, honey eaters and a whole host of others may be spotted. (B, L, D)
Day 11: Fly to Port Moresby via Mt HagenThis morning fly to Port Moresby via Mt Hagen where you will enjoy lunch. Stay overnight at Airways Hotel. (B, L)
Day 12: Onward travelTransfer to the airport to fly home or continue your holiday. (B)

The remote Karawari Lodge is only accessible via its private airstrip or the Karawari river. Accommodation is in 10 separate cottages containing two rooms, each built out of local bush materials and inspired by traditional architecture. Each cottage has two private twin rooms, each with modern en suite bathrooms and a communal veranda. The dining and lounge areas, the bar and a vast collection of Sepik artefacts are housed in Karawari's main lodge building, designed and built in the form of a traditional 'haus tambaran' or spirit house.
