Day 1: Fly to Atlanta, USA

Fly directly from the UK to Atlanta, Georgia. Collect your hire car and drive to The Ritz Charlton for an overnight stay. Alternatively, privately transfer to your hotel and collect your hire car the following day. (N)

Day 2: Asheville

This morning, take the opportunity to explore Atlanta city – fondly nicknamed the ‘Big Peach’. Then drive to Asheville, North Carolina, where you check into the Grand Bohemian Asheville for a two-night stay. This vibrant city is situated between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Smoky Mountains, providing a great base to venture out into the area. (B)

Day 3: Asheville

Today, you may wish to visit Biltmore Estate, a 19th-century Châteauesque mansion with sprawling grounds in Asheville. Alternatively, take the day to enjoy the dramatic scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where there are many walking trails to discover. Typified by beautiful tree-clad slopes, the national park is the most visited in the country and boasts some of the highest mountains in eastern North America. (B)

Day 4: Nashville

Take the scenic drive to Nashville, Tennessee, and stay two nights at the Hutton Hotel. This property is set in the lively West End neighbourhood and has a prime location near Music Row. We recommend visiting the country Music Hall of Fame and Studio B, the world-famous recording studio once used by Elvis and Dolly Parton. Tonight, you may wish to book to see a show at the Grand Ole Opry. (B)

Day 5: Nashville

Today, take a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry to learn the stories of country music greats from past to present. Tickets are also included for a self-guided tour of the Ryman Auditorium, the original home of the Grand Ole Opry, and formerly the Union Gospel Tabernacle in the 1880s. (B)

Day 6: Memphis

Drive to Memphis and stay at The Peabody Memphis, a historic downtown property just a stroll away from Beale Street. This afternoon, join a barbecue tasting tour to sample mouth-watering food from some of the best eateries in town. Authentic regional favourites on offer include dry-rubbed and wet ribs, pulled pork, and pork nachos. (B)

Day 7: Memphis

This morning, visit Graceland, the opulent former mansion of Elvis Presley. Take an audio guided tour around the property and see many other exhibits housed in the complex, including a range of famous outfits and cars belonging to ‘The King’. This afternoon, visit the Civil Rights Museum where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968. Located at the Lorraine Motel, this fascinating museum explores the history of the American Civil Rights movement. (B)

Day 8: Tupelo

Travel to the Elvis Presley Birthplace museum and stay overnight at the Courtyard by Marriott. You’ve the opportunity to visit the humble home where Elvis was born, a museum based on his life, and a memorial chapel where you can watch footage of the sort of church services that so inspired him. (B)

Day 9: Vicksburg

Journey south to the historical town of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the location for a number of crucial battles during the American Civil War. Stay two nights at the historic Anchuca Inn, a landmark antebellum home furnished with fine antiques and art. (B)

Day 10: Vicksburg

Tour an impressive antebellum home, or drive along the Vicksburg National Military Park’s 26-kilometre route for insight into the historic Vicksburg Campaign. There are more than 1,400 memorial monuments, tablets and markers dotted around the 10-square-kilometre park, with many historic bridges, cannons, and a visitor centre. (B)

Day 11: New Orleans

Drive to New Orleans, Louisiana: the last destination on your Deep South journey. You’ve the remainder of the day to explore this melting-pot city. Tonight, you may wish to venture to Frenchman Street to experience the live music performed in its intimate jazz bars. Spend three nights at The Roosevelt New Orleans. (B)

Day 12: New Orleans

Join a private walking tour of New Orleans this morning to learn about the history and blend of cultures that make this city anything but typical. Experience the famous French Quarter with its Caribbean-colonial architecture, cafés and antique shops. This afternoon, join an optional cookery demonstration to learn how to create Cajun and creole dishes like gumbo, jambalaya or barbecue shrimp. (B)

Day 13: New Orleans

Today is at leisure. For insight into this region’s antebellum history, you have the option to visit one of the historical plantations in the area. Alternatively, take a thrilling airboat ride through the swamps and wetlands on the outskirts of the city, where you may see alligators. (B)

Day 14: Fly to the UK

Return your hire car and transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)
