This morning, visit the island of Alcatraz, variously used as a Civil War fort, a military jail and one of the most notorious federal prisons in US history. Afterwards, travel to the quaint town of Sausalito for lunch (at own expense) and then on to Muir Woods; this National Monument forest is full of towering old-growth redwoods that are unique to this area, and – quenched by marine fog – forms an ecosystem of interesting flora and fauna.
