Just a 30-minute drive from Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the best-preserved 19th-century towns in North America. Originally a neutral First Nations village, loyalists then settled here from New York State after the American Revolution. Later, it became the first capital of the colony of Upper Canada. Today, apart from being an ideal base to visit the falls, it also provides a taste of days gone by, with many attractions and historic sites including Fort George, the Historical Society Museum, the Shaw Festival with its three theatres, and shopping in the Heritage District.
