Morning excursion to the Punic and Roman ruins at Carthage. Continue to the beautiful blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said, with its palm-fringed bay overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. (B)

DAY 3: Sousse, Monastir & El Djem

Sousse, Monastir & El Djem

Morning drive to Sousse to visit the Great Mosque and archaeological museum. Continue to Monastir to see the Ribat fortress, an Islamic art museum, and the Bourguiba mausoleum. Drive to El Djem to visit North Africa’s most impressive amphitheatre, and a mosaic museum in a reconstructed Roman townhouse. Drive to the old walled city of Kairouan for 2 nights at La Kasbah. (B)

Morning tour of the Great Mosque of Uqba, one of North Africa’s largest Islamic monuments; the Mosque of the Barber, reputed burial place of Muhammad’s companion Sidi Sahib; and the Aghlabid Reservoirs, built in the ninth century to supply the city with water. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Morning visit to the vast site of Thuburbo Majus with its Capitol and Forum. Continue to Tunis for 3 nights at the Ramada Plaza. (B)
