Climate guide to Tunisia
Tunisia stretches from the Mediterranean shore and the Tell Atlas peaks down to the dunes of the Sahara, and its climate reflects this range. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild with occasional rain and thunderstorms. The south of Tunisia is typically hotter and drier than the north – especially coastal areas, where the sea breeze softens the heat.
Tunisia’s summer months are May to October, when the capital Tunis sees the mercury hit 25-30 degrees Celsius daily, while the desert interior regularly reaches 40 degrees.
Tunisia’s winter months are December to March, and temperatures can dip below 10 degrees Celsius. Intermittent showers are more common at this time of year, but Tunisia sees low levels of rainfall overall – so it’s unlikely you’ll need an umbrella.
In terms of weather, the best time to go to Tunisia is either side of summer, during spring or autumn, when the temperature is more comfortable for tours and excursions.
What to wear for Tunisia's weather
Tunisia enjoys plenty of sunshine throughout the year, and its desert areas offer little shade. To protect yourself from more intense periods of sunlight, we recommend wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and loose, light clothing that covers the arms and legs. For trips into the desert, a cap, scarf or wide-brim hat can help keep you cool.
During the milder winter months, you may wish to bring an additional layer, as evenings can feel cool – especially in the desert and mountain areas.
