Standard Private Tour in brief

Day 1: Fly to Muscat

Fly to Muscat. Transfer to the Crowne Plaza for 2 nights, located in the city centre with its own private beach on the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Oman. (N)

Day 2: Muscat

Morning city tour of Muscat including a tour of the Bait Al Zubair museum and its collection of ancient weapons and costumes, the Sultan’s Palace and the twin forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 3: Nizwa • Al Hajar mountains

Morning drive to Jabal Akhdar, the highest point in Oman and part of the Al Hajar mountain range. Stop en route to visit Nizwa souk and Nizwa fort with its immense round tower. Take a leisurely, guided afternoon walking tour through the mountains and picturesque villages. Stay 2 nights at the Sama Heights Resort, Jabal Shams, an ecoresort overlooking Jabal Misht, Wadi Ghul and the famous Wadi Nakhr, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Explore the rugged surrounds on a gentle hike or bike ride. (B)

Day 4: Al Hajar mountains

Morning visit to Jabrin fort. Built in 1675, its well-preserved rooms, courtyards and fortifications make it easy to imagine what life was like here. Continue to the village of Al Hamra, where there will be an opportunity to ride Arabian horses; these nimble and hardy little horses have a good temperament and are sure-footed with great stamina. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 5: Sharqiya Sands

Set off this morning for a scenic drive to Sharqiya Sands. Early evening sunset camel safari and stay overnight at 1,000 Nights Camp. (B, D)

Day 6: Sharqiya Sands • Sur

Morning dune bashing excursion, an exhilarating ride across high sand banks in a 4×4. Drive to Sur to see how traditional wooden dhow boats are built and visit the Sanseela fort. Continue to Ras Al Jinz beach for a once-in-a-lifetime visit to the green turtle nesting site. The reserve is world renowned for the nesting of the endangered green turtle and is the only place where the public can watch the nesting process of these gentle giants of the sea. Overnight at Ras Al Jinz Scientific & Visitor Centre. (B)

Day 7: Wadi Shab • Muscat

Drive to Muscat via Wadi Shab with its sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater holding turquoise waters, waterfalls and terraced plantations. Swim in the upper wadi and duck into a partially submerged cave. Stay at the Crowne Plaza, where you can enjoy its facilities for the next 3 nights. (B)

Day 8: Bandar Al Khayran

Take a boat cruise to spot dolphins and whales as you pass rocky mountains and small whitewashed houses overlooking the sea. Moor at Bandar Al Khayran, a picturesque inlet with sheltered bays lined by mangrove forests. After lunch, return to Muscat. (B, L)

Day 9: Muscat

Full day at leisure. Alternatively, take part in a range of activities that can be pre-booked including a visit to the National Hospitality Institute for a cooking class with local Omani students or trekking. (B)

Day 10: Fly home

Transfer to the airport for your flight home. (B)

  • Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve
    Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve

    Ras Al-Jinz Scientific and Visitors Centre is located on the eastern shores of the Arabian peninsula in the Ras Al Hadd Turtle Reserve, approximately 1 hour's drive from Sur. The area is world renowned for the nesting endangered green turtle (Chelonia mydas), probably the most important nesting concentration in the Indian Ocean. The centre offers a unique experience: the fascinating spectacle of sea turtles nesting in a completely natural environment. Guided excursions are conducted every night to view the turtles and the nesting process. Within the Ras Al-Jinz Scientific and Visitors Centre is a small, simply furnished hotel. All of the 14 rooms are air conditioned and have an en suite bathroom, and are equipped with a mini refrigerator and flatscreen television.
