Surrounded by Portuguese fortifications, Essaouira is a delightful fishing town with a rich cultural heritage and fine sandy beaches. The small narrow streets of the medina are filled with artisans and craft shops, and in the mornings the harbour is a hive of activity, with fishing boats unloading their catches. The restaurants of Essaouira are known for fish and seafood, and you can also dine at an outdoor fish grill at the port end of Place Moulay Hassan. Just off the coast are the famed Îles Purpuraires, and private boat trips can be arranged to visit the falcon sanctuary here.

Ride a camel off the beaten track and observe the fauna and flora along the Atlantic coast, meeting shepherds and local fishermen along the way. This is a slow and peaceful excursion in the company of these docile animals, and the close supervision and care of your guide will help you to discover the local area.
The impressive town fortifications consist of a striking mixture of Portuguese and Moroccan military architecture. At a local restaurant, help the chef prepare a tagine meal, which will then be served for lunch. Visit the King Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum, named after the founder of the city. Inside, there is an interesting display of artefacts such as archaeological finds in the islands of Mogador and Berber ethnic jewellery from the neighbouring tribes. There are many markets in Essaouria including the spice souks, a jewellery market, artisan markets and the carpentry workshops devoted to cedar and thuya cabinet making. Essaouira has attracted many artists and musicians from different parts of the world.
