Chefchaouen is located in the Rif mountains of northwest Morocco. Founded in 1471, the city was formerly a fortress built to fight Portuguese invasion and later formed part of Spanish Morocco. The blue-washed buildings crowd the narrow winding streets of the medina and the city is surrounded by the green hills of the Rif.
