Israelites, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Christians, Muslims and Turks have all ruled the city at one time or another and have left their mark in the form of synagogues, churches, mosques, minarets and shrines. Despite having an area of only 1sq. km the number of sites within the city walls defies belief. With monuments sacred to all 3 major monotheistic religions, the city holds a significant status for Christians, Jews and Muslims alike.

The Church of the Nativity is one of the oldest churches in the world, built by the emperor Justinian in the sixth century above the spot where Jesus is traditionally believed to have been born. Visit the silver 14-pointed Star of Bethlehem, which marks the spot and is a focal point as you approach the altar. The Chapel of the Manger, ‘the Crib’, is to one side of the grotto and represents the scene of the nativity.
The ancient city of Jerusalem, whose history dates back more than 3,000 years, has numerous highlights and attractions including the Mount of Olives for a panoramic view over the city, Mount Zion to visit King David's tomb, the room of the Last Supper and the Dormition Abbey. Take a walk in the footsteps of Jesus along the Via Dolorosa (The Way of Agony), see the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western (Wailing) Wall for a view of the temple area with the Al-Aksa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Also visit the Garden of Gethsemane, the restored Cardo or 'Main Street', and the City of David to see the latest excavations.
Dating from around the second century BC, the Western Wall, or ‘Wailing Wall’, is the last remaining relic of the Second Jewish Temple and is the most important Jewish prayer site in the world. Millions of pilgrims and visitors from around the world place notes with requests and prayers into its cracks. Tunnels beneath the Western Wall provide a glimpse of the various periods in the history of Jerusalem.
