The Sea of Galilee is actually a freshwater lake 22 km long, 12 km wide and approximately 55 km in circumference. It is the largest freshwater lake in Israel and the lowest freshwater lake in the world. Referred to in the Scriptures under four names, the Sea of Kinnereth, the Sea of Gennesarth, the Sea of Tiberius and the Lake of Galilee, the majority of the lake’s water comes from the Jordan River and it currently supplies around one third of Israel’s annual consumption of freshwater.
