The third largest city in Israel, Haifa is home to the Unesco world heritage site of the Baha’i World Centre, central to followers of the Baha’i faith. Built on the slopes of Mount Carmel, the area has been settled for more than 3,000 years, conquered and governed by a range of peoples including the Phoenicians, Persians, Hasmoneans, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, crusaders, Ottomans, British and the Israelis. The mountain's north slope dominates the city, featuring the imposing Shrine of the Bab set in immaculate terraced gardens, and is a popular visit for tourists. The city plays a major role in Israel’s economy, as a large seaport, tourist centre and home to two important universities.
