Tehran is a modern metropolis set at the foot of the Alborz Mountain range. Mt. Damavand (at 18, 550 feet the highest mountain in Iran) is clearly visible from the city. Tehran is not however considered to be an old city and remained a relatively unimportant settlement until the end of the 18th century when it was made the Persian capital by Agha Mohammed Khan, the founder of the Qajar dynasty.
