Mandrare River Camp is set in the grounds of an old colonial plantation house, on the banks of the Mandrare River. The sun rises directly in front of the tents over the Mandrare River giving beautiful early morning views. This camp has six large, comfortable tents. Each tent has a four-poster bed, wooden furniture, 24 hour electric lighting and en suite facilities. Hot water is constantly available and the bathroom is fully plumbed. Outside is a private veranda with two comfortable canvas safari chairs and a drinks table; a great way to sit and relax away from the midday sun or with a gin and tonic in the evenings. Opposite Mandrare Camp are the sacred ancestral forests of the Antandroy tribe. Mandrare is an excellent place to interact with the local community and expert guides will accompany you to the ancient forest tombs to explain the culture of ancestor worship. Sit around ...
Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge is located a short drive away from the village of Manafiafy. The accommodation consists of six private bungalows and is an intriguing combination of rainforest lodge and barefoot luxury beach property rolled into one. Each spacious en suite bungalow has an indoor seating area and its own sundeck with separate access to the magnificent unspoilt beach. Meals are taken with the other guests and your host in an open-sided bar and dining area. Swimming and snorkelling from the beach is excellent. Activities offered at Manafiafy include day and night guided rainforest walks with indigenous bird and lemur sightings, boat safaris both along the river (to look for crocodiles) and on the ocean to deserted beached for snorkelling and swimming. Whales may also be viewed between July and December.
This small, elegant hotel of only 46 rooms, takes its name from the Palissander tree, wood from which has been used to furnish the property, creating a feeling of warmth. The rooms are simply but stylishly furnished, featuring local handicrafts in order to give the property a uniquely Malagasy feel. Located on a hillside, many of the rooms offer views over the city, as does the restaurant which also has an outdoor terrace.
