Morning tour of Urbino, a beautiful town with the wonderful Palazzo Ducale at its heart. This perfect example of Renaissance architecture hosts masterpieces by Raphael and Piero della Francesca. After lunch, depart for the borgo of Mondavio, a medieval hilltop town surrounded by walls. (B)Day 3: Gradara • San Marino
Depart for the borgo of Gradara, another of the region’s monumental Renaissance fortresses. Visit the main art gallery and walk the walls that enclose the borgo. Continue to San Marino for lunch and have time at leisure to enjoy the world’s oldest republic, which dates back to 301AD. (B)Day 4: Recanati • Sirolo
Tour of Recanati, with its wonderful views that stretch from the Sibillini mountains to the Adriatic coast. The town was the birthplace of poet Giacomo Leopardi, whose statue now stands in the delightful Palazzo Antici Mattei. Other highlights include Palazzo Leopardi and the church and convent of the Capuchin friars. After lunch, continue to Sirolo, which lies on the southern slopes of Mount Conero overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Time at leisure to enjoy the town or walk to the beach. (B)Day 5: Gubbio • Montefalco
Leave Marche for Umbria and visit Gubbio, one of the region’s most beautiful cites. Take a guided tour including the Duomo, Piazza Grande and the traditional blacksmith shops which can be found around the town. Drive to the borgo of Montefalco, known for its wine and referred to as the ‘Balcony of Umbria’ due to its enchanting hilltop location. Stay at Hotel Villa Zuccari (or similar) for 3 nights. Traditional dinner at the hotel. (B, D)Day 6: Torgiano • Perugia
Morning visit to the borgo of Torgiano, one of the undisputed Italian capitals of wine and olive oil. After a walking tour, visit the museum for olive oil and wine tasting. In the afternoon, continue to Perugia, the capital of Umbria. Take in the main sites including La Fontana Maggiore and the Etruscan Arch of Augustus. Perugia is also known as ‘the chocolate city’, so a chocolate tasting is a must. Time for dinner in Perugia. (B)Day 7: Deruta • Castiglione del Lago
Drive to the borgo of Deruta, famed for its ceramics and majolica pottery. Visit the museum and some of the workshops before continuing towards Lake Trasimeno for an unguided visit to Castiglione del Lago; overlooking the lake, this is one of the most beautiful and dramatic borgos in the region, with huge medieval walls and towers. Farewell dinner at a restaurant by the lake. (B, D)Day 8: Fly to London
