Fly from London (regional connections available) to Colombo with Sri Lankan Airlines. (N)
Arrive in Colombo in the early afternoon and take a 30-minute transfer to the Jetwing Lagoon on Negombo lagoon for 1 night (Family Room). (N)
Take to the waters for your first glimpse of rural life in Sri Lanka with a morning catamaran ride from Negombo beach. Explore mangrove swamps, discover local fishing techniques or simply sit back and enjoy the ride. En route to Matale
(approximately 3 hours’ driving, excluding stops) visit the Pinnewala Elephant Sanctuary, set up to save abandoned or orphaned wild elephants. Stay 4 nights at Jim’s Farm Villas (Spice Garden Villa) to experience how a working farm in Sri Lanka operates and meet the farm’s animals. (B)
This morning climb one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated sights, the rock fortress of Sigiriya. Zig zag your way to the summit for breathtaking views and marvel at how the citadel, which sits at the top, was constructed in this challenging environment more than 1,500 years ago. Later, explore Dambulla caves, home to 2,000-year-old, brightly coloured wall paintings, large Buddha statues and a number of playful monkeys! (B)
Day at leisure to relax or enjoy the surrounding countryside. Optional activities include cycling among the lush 20 hectares of Jim’s Farm, walking in the Knuckles mountain range, learning how to cook delicious Sri Lankan cuisine or walking to the pretty, medieval Padeniya Raje temple. (B)
Rise early to visit the Temple of the Tooth in time for prayer. Later test out your haggling skills in the colourful markets of Kandy. Afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool, explore the sprawling Peradeniya Botanical Gardens or visit local craftsmen and learn from the local artisans specialising in woodcraft, batik, gems and pottery. Trains in Sri Lanka are a fascinating experience; this morning, take the midday train from Kandy to Hatton. Continue your journey to Koslanda (approximately 3 hours’ driving) and stay 2 nights at the Living Heritage Koslanda (Deluxe Room), located on a large, atmospheric estate and tea plantation. (B, D)
Day at leisure to experience the tea plantation, take part in trekking excursions, plant a tree or experience a Sri Lankan cookery lesson. (B, L, D)
Drive the 1-hour journey to the beautiful wildlife reserve of Yala, home to leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, elephants, wild pigs and crocodiles. En route to the park, stop at the Diyaluma waterfall, where the downpour leaps over the cliff face. Stay 2 nights under canvas in the Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris camp (Family Tent) for a blend of wilderness camping and luxury comforts. (B, L, D)
Explore the park in search of the elusive leopard on a morning wildlife safari. Afternoon at leisure to relax, take an optional cycle ride outside the park or join a further jeep safari. (B, L, D)
Drive the 3-hour journey to the luxurious Fortress, just outside Galle, for 3 nights’ relaxation on Koggala beach (Fortress Room). (B)
Days at leisure. Why not take a tour of Galle and explore the historic Galle fort. Other options include a whale-watching excursion, visiting Galle’s mask museum or a trip to the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda, which has released over 500,000 turtles back into the oceans since it opened in 1986. (B)
Transfer to Colombo airport and fly home with Sri Lankan Airlines. (B)
