The beautiful Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka has a wealth of attractions for the whole family - with glorious white sand beaches, rich and exotic wildlife, mystical ruins and activities including cycling, whale watching and snorkelling. Sri Lanka is a year round destination and while the south-west coast experiences the monsoon in the period May-September, this is a perfect time to visit the East Coast.

Transfer to Marawila on Sri Lanka's west coast for an overnight stay at Horathapola Estate (Family Lodge), a planter's bungalow with a large garden and outdoor pool. Afternoon at leisure. (D)
Drive to Wilpattu National Park for 2 nights at Noel Rodrigo's Leopard Safaris. This beautiful wildlife sanctuary is known for its large number of watering holes which attract a variety of water birds and wildlife, including elephants, leopards, sloth bears. Afternoon wildlife drive. (B, L, D)
Morning wildlife drive in the park. In the afternoon relax at your hotel or take part in optional activities such as birdwatching, cooking classes and amateur photography walks. (B, L, D)
Drive to the Cultural Triangle for 4 nights at Ulagalla (Deluxe room with attic). (B)
Morning climb of Sigiriya rock fortress, which rises 200 metres from the scrub jungle below and was once the stronghold of a fortified town. There are some stunning views over the surrounding countryside, although the climb is steep and in parts very narrow. Afternoon at leisure. (B)
In the morning cycle in Polonnaruwa where sights include the Royal Palace and the Gal Viharaya with three splendid statues of Buddha. Lunch at Priyamali Gedara before taking an optional afternoon trip to the Minneriya Tank, a large ancient reservoir and a habitat for elephants, deer, leopards, sloth bears and crocodile. (B)
This morning take a gentle trek through Hiriwadunna taking in the views of nature, wildlife and traditional lifestyles of the local villages. Optional afternoon cookery lesson or cycle ride at Pewehera. (B)
Drive to Trincomalee on the east coast for 4 nights at Uga Jungle Beach (Beach Villa). There are a range of water sports on offer here including snorkelling on coral reefs at Pigeon Island. (B)
Days at leisure or take an optional whale-watching trip. Trincomalee, has recently been recognised by many oceanographers as the world's best vantage point for blue whale spotting. Other potential sightings include sperm whales and dolphins. (B)
Domestic flight to Colombo for an overnight at the Wallawa (Family suite). (B)
