Accommodation rating: Superior
'Mahoora', meaning `the great one', is a term used by the ancient Vedda tribe to describe a person of great importance, including royalty. The Mahoora Luxury Camps feature canvas tents with high ceilings, a sleeping area with comfortable beds and a living room with cosy canvas armchairs, baggage rack and brightly coloured floor cushions. The tents are exclusively designed and handmade in Sri Lanka and feature wall-to-wall carpets and thick floor-length patchwork curtains that cover 'windows' and 'doors'. Little touches such as torches, toiletries, towels, candles, and oil lamps are provided. A generator provides power at dusk. Unlimited house wines, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages are served out of a well-stocked bar. Drinks are followed by a three-course meal served with a chef in attendance. Overall, the experience is designed to blend superior service with an indigenous touch.
Laptop and digital camera charging facilities are available, and guests are provided with an umbrella, slippers and a fresh fruit basket on arrival. Security and first aid is ensured at the campsites by the Eco Team staff. For wildlife viewing, a Land Rover Defender or Land Cruiser Jeep is provided with a qualified naturalist to gain first-hand knowledge about the environment, the flora and fauna.
The camps, managed by Eco Team, one of the premier wildlife companies on the island, are set in close proximity to a range of national parks, including Yala, Uda Walawe, Bundela and Sinharaja Rainforest. The campsites are chosen by Eco Team for their location, allowing you to spend more time looking for wildlife than you would on a standard day safari. The term 'luxury' is used relatively to describe the experience provided by Mahoora in the heart of the jungle, and the standard of accommodation must be regarded as simple.
