On the outskirts of Kandy and set on a hill, Elephant Stables, originally the home of a Sri Lankan nobleman, was converted into a small hotel in 2013. Spread over two floors, each of the seven rooms and suites are comfortably furnished and elegantly decorated by combining the original colonial features with traditional Kandyan artefacts and modern conveniences. No two rooms in this hotel are of the same size and, while some rooms offer mountain views, others overlook the garden. Facilities include a dining room that serves traditional Sri Lankan and continental dishes, a library with a good collection of coffee-table books on Sri Lanka, and an outdoor swimming pool. Although Elephant Stables welcomes families, the design and layout of the hotel means parental supervision is essential whilst accessing the pool and public areas.
