The quiet town of Rishikesh is located on the banks of the holy River Ganges, and for Hindus is the starting point for trips to Himalayan pilgrimage centres such as Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri, near the source of this sacred river. Rishikesh is a popular place to stay for those interested in the study of yoga, meditation and other aspects of Hinduism, and gained instant fame in the 1960s as the place where the Beatles came to be with their guru, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
