In 1611 Thakur Gopal Das Ji was granted Khejarla for defending Marwar against invaders. Driving through the dusty and sleepy village there is no hint that a stunning fort awaits until the main entrance is reached. Khejarla is home to the popular Bishnois, a community of nature worshippers. The village has a memorial for Amrita Devi, a Bishnoi woman, and 362 of her people who were killed in the 18th century, trying to stop a medieval chieftain logging wood for his palace.
