The attractive little town of Deogarh, or Castle of the Gods, is an excellent place to take a break from the hectic pace of travelling in India. It is located 135km north of Udaipur and is surrounded by lakes, hills and rugged countryside. Deogarh has a good bazaar for textiles and its elevation means it is relatively cool. There is an old fort on a hill as well as a magnificent palace on a hillock, with murals illustrating the fine local school of miniature painting. Raghosagar Lake, which is pleasant to walk around, has an island with a romantic ruined temple and tombs. Numerous migratory birds are attracted here. The lake also provides an appropriate setting for the 200-year-old palace, Gorkal Vilas.
