Day 4: Fly to BhubaneswarEarly morning flight to Bhubaneswar for a 2-night stay at Mayfair Lagoon. Bhubaneswar is known for its many awe-inspiring temples; take an afternoon sightseeing tour to visit three of the most important: Lingaraja, Mukteswara and Rajarani. (B)
Day 5: BhubaneswarExcursion to the caves at Udayagiri, Ratnagiri and Lalitgiri, among the earliest in India and dating from the Jain and Buddhist occupation of the region. The caves have been etched out of coarse-grained sandstone hills, which rise nearly 40 metres above the surrounding lateritic plain. (B)
Day 6: PuriDrive to the coastal settlement of Puri, stopping en route at the artisan villages of Pipli and Raghurajpur. Pipli is known for its beautiful applique craftwork that is displayed in every house and shop along the road, giving out a burst of colour. Stay 3 nights at Mayfair Waves. (B)
Day 7: KonarkVisit the impressive sun temple at Konark, a Unesco-listed site constructed in the mid-13th century. It is thought to have been built by the Orissan king, Narashimhadev I, to celebrate his military victory over the Muslims. (B)
Day 8: Lake ChilikaMorning boat ride on Lake Chilika, the largest brackish body of water in Asia. The lake is noted for the one million or more migratory birds, including osprey, grey-legged geese, cranes and flamingoes, that flock here in winter (Nov to Jan) from as far as Siberia and Iran. (B)
Day 9: Fly to Bagdogra • DarjeelingFly to Bagdogra, via Kolkata, before driving to Darjeeling. Stay 3 nights at Glenburn Tea Estate outside Darjeeling. (B, L, D)
