Thekkady is set among the endless green slopes of the Cardamom Hills in the spice-growing region of the Western Ghats. The dense jungle and the vast plantations of teak, cardamom, tea, rubber and coffee offer perfect respite from the heat of the coastal plains. Thekkady is also home to the Periyar wildlife reserve, which is famous for its elephant. There is a variety of other wildlife including barking deer, wild boar, Indian bison and the giant Malabar squirrel. Although the reserve is a designated tiger reserve, there are less than 40 tigers and they are shy and hard to find so tiger sightings are very rare.
