Board a private 'kettuvallam', a traditional houseboat of Kerala that has been stylishly converted to feature all essential modern conveniences.
In Malyalam, the word `kettuvallam' means a sewn or stitched canoe. Historically, these were traditionally built of planks sewn together with coir cordage, threaded through with a needle carved from a palm frond. The seams, caulked with coir plugs soaked in sardine or cashew oil, made the boats waterproof. The kettuvallams were designed to carry heavy cargos, such as coconuts and spices and to provide living accommodation for the boatmen aboard.
A cruise in a converted kettuvallam is an ideal way to explore Kerala's beautiful backwaters. Preserving the boats' historic character and style, craftsmen have created a charming setting on board. Considered simple, the houseboats feature either one or two bedrooms that are spacious yet elegantly furnished and feature a modern lavatory and shower cubicle. The Kumarakom Lake Resort houseboats are also among the few that feature a fully air conditioned living / dining room, kitchen and an open-air front deck living area. Most of the boats are powered by engine while some are poled by local oarsmen and equipped with powerful generators that allow the use of air conditioning whilst cruising. One of the distinct features of the houseboat is the floor-to-ceiling glass wall that surrounds the living / dining area. This allows guests to take in views of the river from the comfort of the air conditioned living area whilst enjoying sumptuous meals as the boat cruises through the backwaters.
In the afternoon, cruise through the narrow canals and waterways of Kerala's backwaters. Cruise until 5pm when the boat will be anchored. Boats cannot cruise after this time as this is when the fishermen take their nets to the water to begin their night's fishing.
In the evening, authentic Keralan cuisine will be served on board the boat.
