Spend the morning at the village of Kumbalanghi to learn about life in rural Kerala. The village has been set up to preserve and uphold ancient crafts such as coir making, weaving, cigar making and pottery as well as traditional fishing techniques. Observe and partake in a variety of activities before having lunch overlooking the backwaters. Afternoon at leisure to explore Kochi independently before visiting a Kathakali dance studio to see a traditional performance. Arrive early to see the performers apply their colourful makeup. Travel through endless green hilly scenery to Thekkady, a region abundant with spice plantations and the gateway to Periyar National Park, south India’s most popular wildlife reserve. Visit a private spice plantation before a late afternoon cooking lesson to learn the secrets of traditional Kerala cuisine. Early-morning nature walk in Periyar National Park. While tiger sightings are unlikely, the walk is beautiful, taking you through tribal communities, grasslands and deciduous forest, providing excellent opportunities to watch the resident birdlife. Head to Kumarakom, an idyllic backwater fishing village located on Kerala’s largest lake – Vembanad. Vivanta by Taj - Malabar is situated on Willingdon Island, with magnificent views of Kochi (Cochin) harbour and beautiful backwaters. The hotel consists of 96 rooms including suites, all with air-conditioning, satellite television, and en suite bathroom. Restaurants include the Rice Boat, serving Keralan seafood specialties, the Waterfront Café offering Indian and Continental Cuisine, and Kochi’s only Thai restaurant. Other facilities include an infinity pool, spa and a gym.
Sprawled across 4 hectares of land, Vivanta by Taj - Kovalam (previously the Taj Green Cove Resort) is located on a hillock facing the sea. The granite stone cottages, with elephant grass thatched rooftops are light, airy and have modern amenities. A few cottages also have a private balcony with some of them overlooking the hill while others offer a panoramic view of the sea. Other facilities include a speciality restaurant, which serves curries from different parts of the country, a coffee shop and a bar. In addition, the Jiva Spa offers a range of treatments inspired by traditional Indian therapies. The hotel is located about 200 metres from the beach and does not have direct access to the beach.
Set amidst spice plantations, Thekkady is known for its spices and the Periyar Wildlife Reserve. Spice Village is close to the game reserve and comprises individual cottages set amid a landscaped spice garden. The resort has a swimming pool, games facilities and an excellent restaurant. Each cottage has en suite facilities and activities can include visits to the game reserve, treks in the nearby spice and tea plantations and forest walks.
