The Udai Bilas Palace overlooks a lake with views to the small town of Dungarpur. When water levels are low, it is possible to take a walk to a small private shrine which is situated in the centre of the lake. The palace was enlarged in 1940 by Maharawal Laxman Singhji, who built three new wings. Still the royal residence, the palace offers accommodation in the house-guest tradition. There are 20 air-conditioned bedrooms: seven double rooms, three single rooms and 10 suites. From suites to guestrooms, each offers an enchanting individuality. Many original furnishings and fittings are still in use and, although they are now somewhat faded, with a little imagination one can envisage what it must have been like living here in times gone by.
