Moored towards the quieter end of the Dal Lake, the Sukoon boat, originally built in the late 1970s by Mr Chapri Sr, has an interesting history. Former owner Mr Chapri Sr was a huge fan of American astronaut Neil Armstrong and had exchanged letters with him and named the boat in his honour. The boat, which has in the past played host to several high-profile visitors to Srinagar including Sherpa Tenzin, is today owned and managed by the next generation of the Chapri family. Today, the sympathetically renovated and refurbished houseboat, re-christened as 'Sukoon', a Sufi term usually used to describe an elevated state of mind, is arguably one of the most comfortable boats on the Dal Lake. Sukoon retains many of its original features including the carved cedar wood panelling and the crystal chandelier, but it has been adapted to include essential modern amenities. The boat features 5 spacious, comfortably furnished rooms that combine traditional features with contemporary style décor, offering glorious views of the Dal Lake. There is a large living room with a small collection of books, a plush dining room and a sundeck where guests can lounge during the day or dine under sun umbrellas. The boat is fully staffed and the resident chef who changes the menu on a daily basis uses the freshest of local ingredients. Guests are offered a choice between Indian and international cuisine at dinner. The boat is usually booked on a half-board basis and includes Kashmiri breakfast and dinner. The Shikara ride between the boat and the jetty is on a shared basis and is provided by the Sukoon.
