Accommodation rating: Superior
The Rajbari Bawali is a stunning heritage hotel in the small village of Bawali, just over an hour south of Kolkata (Calcutta). The former 18th-century neo-classical palace was once home to the wealthy Zamindars of Bengal (now called Nawabs) and has been beautifully restored. Maintaining its old world charm, it is replete with decorative Italian architectural features, grand colonnades, high ceilings and stately reception rooms. Each room or suite is furnished with a four-poster bed, shabby chic antiques and has a modern, en suite bathroom.
Dine in the Durbar Hall, which serves international cuisine and authentic Bengali cuisine; we recommend the local Bengali thali. Cooking demonstrations are offered to guests, or you can join a bike ride or walk around the local villages, meeting the locals. Guests can relax by the large swimming pool, under the frangipani trees or treat themselves to a treatment in the Mantra Spa.
Features: 30 rooms, restaurant, bar, garden, swimming pool, spa, Wi-Fi.
Room amenities: Air conditioning, safe.
