In Puducherrys (Pondicherry) seldom-explored Tamil quarter, Maison Perumal is set among rows of old Tamil houses. Restored to its original glory, Maison Perumal combines the best of French and Dravidian style and is a celebration of a way of life that very few know exists. The 10 rooms with period furniture, sepia-tinted portraits, yellow and red oxide floors are elegantly furnished in minimalist style. While the two courtyards reflect the traditional local style, the fluted pilaster arched windows give it a French charm. The property's simple Creole cuisine is a typical amalgamation of French and Tamil flavours and features just one signature dish through the day. For dinner, there is also a grilled seafood platter. In the absence of deep freeze and cold storage facilities, the minimalist style seen throughout the hotel seems to have been extended to the kitchen. The staff and the hotel exude warmth and the property is managed more like a gracious home rather than a boutique hotel.
