Guyana offers magnificent natural treasures, and its rivers, jungles and savannas teem with wildlife, including jaguars and abundant bird varieties, as well as rare flora. The highlands are home to the world's tallest single-drop cascade, the mighty Kaieteur Falls. This is a non-exclusive small group tour (max 10 people) operating on set departure dates. It is possible to travel privately at a supplement.

Discovery Private Tour in brief

Day 1: Georgetown

Fly to Georgetown, via the Caribbean. Stay at Cara Lodge for 2 nights. * Due to changeable flight schedules, it may be necessary to add an extra day to the itinerary and overnight en-route in Barbados or Port of Spain (Trinidad). (N)

Day 2: Georgetown

Visit Kaieteur Falls by light aircraft. (B)

Day 3: Iwokrama

Fly to the interior and transfer to Iwokrama River Lodge for 2 nights. (B, L, D)

Day 4: Iwokrama

Early morning birding boat trip on the Essequibo river. Hike up Turtle Mountain for views over the forest canopy. Afternoon excursion to Kurupukari Falls to see the Amerindian petroglyphs and visit a local village. (B, L, D)

Day 5: Atta

Wildlife walk along the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway and search for elusive jaguars. 2-night stay at Atta Rainforest Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 6: Atta Rainforest

Take birding walks in the forest around the lodge or on the Canopy Walkway. (B, L, D)

Day 7: Surama

Morning excursion to look for cock-of-the-rock birds. See village life in Surama and stay at the Surama Eco Lodge for 2 nights. (B, L, D)

Day 8: Surama

Early morning birding walk, then climb Surama Mountain for views over the savanna. This afternoon, take a canoe trip along the Burro Burro river. (B, L, D)

Day 9: Rupununi

Continue through the grasslands towards the foothills of the Pakaraima mountains and the Rupununi savanna. Stay 1 night at Rock View Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 10: Karanambu

Early morning birding walk and watch the sun rise revealing spectacular views over the savanna and villages. Travel by land and river to Karanambu Ranch, home of the McTurk family. The late Diane McTurk was well known for her work with rehabilitating orphaned giant river otters to the wild. Stay for 2 nights. (B, L, D)

Day 11: Karanambu

Explore the flooded forest, fish in Simoni pond and enjoy a rum punch under the stars. (B, L, D)

Day 12: Caiman House

Search for giant anteaters and wild giant river otters. Transfer to Caiman House, home to black caimans. Evening river excursion. (B, L, D)

Day 13: Georgetown

Early morning excursions. Fly back to Georgetown and take a city tour. Stay overnight at Cara Lodge. Enjoy a Guyanese fusion dinner at the Backyard Cafe. (B, L, D)

Day 14: Fly to London

Fly to London, via the Caribbean or USA. (B)

Day 15: London

Arrive in London. (N)

Discovery Tour:

This tour is best suited to the hardier traveller as it includes some basic accommodation and some rougher journeys on unpaved roads in remote areas.

Break your outbound journey with a stop on a Caribbean island or take a pretour to explore the Guayanese coastal mangroves and wetlands. Guyana can also be combined with neighbouring Suriname or French Guiana.   • Surama Eco Lodge
    Surama Eco Lodge

    The Surama Eco Lodge is located in the village of Surama, which consists of a handful of small buildings surrounded by cattle grazing on the pasture. The community has embraced eco-tourism as a sustainable form of development and built this simple guesthouse complex in the centre of the town. The accommodation is in very simple yet comfortable rooms and cabins with private bathrooms. Experience a stay with friendly Amerindian people, converse with them in English, see the school and experience their culture.

  • Rock View Lodge
    Rock View Lodge

    Nestled between the Amerindian villages of Annai and Rupertee, Rock View Lodge offers two guest houses each with four self-contained comfortable rooms. The lodge is set in gardens and orchards that attract hundreds of hummingbirds. You can join the local villagers in a game of volleyball, football or cricket, or just relax by the only pool in the Rupununi. The restaurant menu includes Brazilian barbecue prepared on a wood-fire grill under 50-year-old mango trees. Other delicacies are chicken and duck with coconut milk or baked fish seasoned in herbs from the organic garden. The Annai airstrip is located just 500 metres from the lodge.

  • Karanambu Lodge
    Karanambu Lodge

    Karanambu Lodge offers simple accommodation in six mud brick cottages with thatched roofs, and is very much part of the bush experience. The beds are comfortable and covered with their own mosquito nets, and each room has a private bathroom and a veranda with a hammock. Meals are served around a communal dining table in the living room of the main ranch. The lodge is run by the McTurk family on the family's former cattle ranch and was opened to the public by the late Diane McTurk, a world-renowned expert on giant river otters.

  • Iwokrama River Lodge
    Iwokrama River Lodge

    The Iwokrama River Lodge is a field station and wildlife research centre located in Kurupukari on the banks of the Essequibo river, on the north-eastern borders of the Iwokrama forest. Accommodation is in eight timber cabins with thatched roofs, fans and private bathroom facilities. Meals are served in the main dining hall. The lodge is the base for exploratory trips into the forest, where you can sling a hammock at one of the numerous satellite camps. Turtle Mountain offers a challenging hike rewarded by spectacular views across the canopy and river to the distant mountains.

  • Cara Lodge Hotel
    Cara Lodge Hotel

    Cara Lodge Hotelwas built in the 1840s and originally consisted of two houses. It has a long history and was the home of the first Lord Mayor of Georgetown. Over the years it has hosted many dignitaries including Edward VII who stayed at the house in 1923 and planted the sapodilla tree in the front garden to mark the occasion. Other notable guests to have visited in recent years include former American president Jimmy Carter, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Mick Jagger. The lodge does not have the full services of a 5-star hotel but this is made up for by the unique atmosphere and character of the property and the congenial family atmosphere. The rooms are all individually styled and decorated in Caribbean flavours with local kufa furniture. The Bottle restaurant is known as the best in the capital.

    Atta Rainforest Lodge

    Atta Rainforest Lodge is a comfortable camp with eight rooms with private bathrooms within the Iwokrama Forest Reserve, just a short walk from the Iwokrama canopy walkway. Surrounded by pristine forest and built in collaboration with the local communities using natural local materials, the lodge features an open-sided main building housing the bar and sitting and dining areas.

For all other departure dates, once the minimum number of people booked has been reached, this tour is also guaranteed to run. Our sales consultants will be able to advise how many people are booked for your chosen date at the time of enquiry, giving you the confidence to book safe in the knowledge your tour will go ahead.
