Taroko National Park is situated in the north east of Taiwan, facing the Pacific Ocean on the east and covering an area of more than 92,000 hectares in the northern section of the Central Mountain Range. The National Park is 36 kilometres from north to south and 42 kilometres from east to west. The spectacular Taroko Gorge and the beauty of the Liwu River can be enjoyed from the central cross-island highway.

Taroko gorge in the Taroko National Park can be easily explored with the use of a private car and driver, with many scenic spots and viewpoints to visit. Highlights include the Eternal Spring Shrine; the Baiyang waterfall; and Yanzikou (Swallo Grotto), a scenic area of cliff faces, waterfalls and springs. The small resort of Tienhsiang can also be visited, from where you can leave the car and walk up to the Hsiang-Te Temple, which is perched on a ledge overlooking the gorge.
Explore Taroko National Park beyond the main highway, via a number of walking trails that wind through the gorge passing small shrines, temples and rock formations. There are eight different routes, covering between 2-8km, with varying degrees of difficulty and steepness. Along all the trails there are a variety of trees, flowers and butterflies, and various bird species can be spotted such as Swinhoe's pheasant, the Formosan blue magpie and the Formosan laughing thrush. There are also 34 species of mammals found in the park, including the black bear, Formosan macaque (a type of monkey), serow (small antelopes), wild boar, and sambar deer, but these are much less frequently seen.
