Early Portuguese sailors named Taiwan Ilha Formosa, meaning ‘beautiful island’, due to the breathtaking scenery, which still impresses modern visitors today. The energetic capital, Taipei, is home to possibly the best collection of Chinese artefacts in the world, while Tainan showcases Taiwanese architecture. The countryside is perhaps the biggest surprise, with deep gorges, snow-capped mountains, hot springs, tea plantations and rugged coastline.

Days 4-5: Sun Moon LakeDrive south to the village of Beipu, home to members of the the Hakka ethnic minority group. See the traditional architecture and sample Hakka food, then continue to Sun Moon Lake for a 2-night stay at the Fleur de Chine hotel. The following day, take a short boat excursion on the lake, then visit the Wenwu Temple and the Tse-en Pagoda. (B)
Day 6: AlishanDrive to the Alishan Forest Park, one of the most spectacular mountainous regions of Taiwan. Afternoon walking tour of the park. Overnight at Alishan House. (B, D)
Day 7: Tainan • Fo Guang Shan monasteryOptional early morning ride on the Alishan Forest Railway to see the sunrise (weather permitting) from the summit of Mount Alishan. After breakfast, drive to the charming mountain township of Zhuqi, and take a stroll down historic Fenchihu Old Street. Continue to Tainan to visit Fort Anping and historic Yanping Street. Then proceed to Fo Guang Shan, the largest Buddhist monastery in south-east Asia. Stay overnight at the monastery guesthouse*. (B, D)
Day 8: Kenting • HualienOption to rise early and join the monks for morning prayers. Drive south to Kenting National Park, which protects an area of low-lying hills, limestone caves, forests and beaches. Explore the park on foot, then head north towards Taitung. Stay 1 night at the Hotel Royal Chihpen. (B, L)
Day 9: Taroko gorgeDrive north on a sightseeing route to the Taroko National Park and stay 1 night at Silks Place Taroko. (B)
Day 10: TaipeiMorning tour of remarkable Taroko gorge and visit the Eternal Spring shrine and the Swallow Grotto. Drive on to Taipei. Stay overnight at The Sherwood hotel. Options available to extend your stay in Taipei. (B)

Alishan House has a delightful setting on the forested hillsides near Alishan Forest Park. Founded by Master Hsing Yun in 1967, Fo Guang Shan has evolved from a mountaintop bamboo forest to the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The two lodges here, Pilgrims and Bamboo Garden, offer en suite guest accommodation within the monastery. Rooms are basic but comfortable, with air conditioning, bottled water, small televisions and tea making facilities. Both lodges have convention rooms and extensive dining facilities serving vegetarian meals such as noodles or dumplings, in keeping with Buddhist stricture.
The Hotel Royal Chihpen is located in the Chihpen Hot Springs, 20km south-west of Taitung City and close to the Chihpen National Forest Recreation Area. Rooms are brightly decorated and feature large glass windows for superb views of the surrounding rich natural landscapes. There is a choice of three restaurants serving a range of Chinese, Japanese and western cuisine. The hotel offers guests extensive spa facilities including indoor and outdoor hot spring baths.
