Accommodation rating: Luxury
Standing on the shores of one of Taiwan's main national parks, Sun Moon Lake, the Lalu is surrounded by misty green landscapes and emerald waters. The hotel is named after an indigenous aboriginal settlement on the lake and it is an area rich in local culture. Trails around the hotel offer the chance for strenuous mountain walks or gentle meanders through forests and grasslands, past temples and pagodas and around the lake shore. There are good bird watching opportunities in the area, with waterfowl such as heron, kingfisher and egret. Boat trips are also possible as well as drives into the surrounding mountains to small towns, craft workshops and tea estates.
The views of the lake and surrounding mountains from the hotel are wide-ranging and all suites and villas have lake views. The rooms are designed in a modern Asian style, uncluttered and in dark woods with large windows and spacious balconies. A focal point of the hotel is the heated infinity edge pool on a ledge over the lake and there is a tea house and Chinese, Japanese and fusion restaurants. The hotel also offers sightseeing opportunities, with or without guides, and a luxurious spa which makes use of the tranquil location and gardens.
